ACIS2010 Doctoral Consortium
Brisbane, Queensland, 28-30 November 2010
Call for Nominations

Doctoral Consortium Sponsor

Australian Council of Professors and Heads of Information Systems

Important Dates:

Nomination deadline 28 Aug 2010
Notification of Acceptance 28 Sep 2010
Final draft due 28 Oct 2010

Nominations are invited for the Australasian Conference on Information Systems (ACIS) 2010 Doctoral Consortium. The consortium will be held on 28-30 November 2010, immediately prior to the 2010 ACIS Conference, in Brisbane, Queensland (December 1-3).

The Consortium provides a unique opportunity for doctoral students in Information Systems to present their research to an audience of peers and senior faculty in a sharing, supportive environment, and participate in a number of plenary sessions with senior Information Systems academics. This year, the keynote for the event will be presented by Professor Gordon Davis, University of Minnesota.

Consortium activities will commence with Registration and Introductions late afternoon on the Sunday, 28th November, followed by a barbeque dinner. Formal events are scheduled all day on the 29th and through mid-afternoon on the 30th November. The event, the barbeque on the 28th November, and the consortium dinner on the 29th November, areis generously sponsored by the Australian Council of Professors and Heads of Information Systems (ACPHIS).

Each of the two main days will focus on providing constructive feedback to students on their research. Students will present their research in small groups, each of which will be assisted by two academics. Experienced academics will also participate in practical research-career related plenary sessions.

Objectives of the Consortium
The Doctoral Consortium will provide students with an opportunity to:

  • Present their research work in a relaxed and supportive environment
  • Receive feedback and suggestions from peers and experienced faculty
  • Gain an overview of the breadth and depth of IS research
  • Obtain insight into directions for IS research undertaken by other doctoral candidates
  • Discuss concerns about research, supervision, the job market, and other career-related issues
  • Network with peers and future colleagues

Costs
There is no charge for the consortium, which is sponsored by University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, and ACPHIS. Home institutions are encouraged to provide financial assistance to successful nominees in the form of travel and accommodation expenses. Low-cost accommodation is available, details of which will be provided on acceptance.

Submission Procedures
To be eligible for the Consortium the candidate must be a current doctoral student within a recognized university. Ideally, the candidate should have chosen their theoretical approach, developed their methodology, and started their empirical work, but should at the time of the Consortium have at least 6-12 months work remaining before expected completion. Submissions will be reviewed by a group of ACIS Consortium faculty.

The number of attendees will be limited to 18, organized into 3 streams of 6 students; each stream led by two senior, internationally notable IS academics, who will have carefully reviewed the student submissions. All participants are required to be equally prepared and carefully review all proposals in their stream prior to the Consortium so that they are prepared to contribute to the discussion on each student’s research.

In the interests of diversity and equity, given more than one nomination from any single institution, we require that you rank the nominees. Note that first-ranked nominees will have equal chance against other 1st ranked or sole nominees. A 2nd ranked nominee would only be considered after all 1st ranked/sole nominees.

The language of the consortium is English. All submitted materials must be in English. Attendees must have sufficient proficiency in English to allow them to participate in the academic discussions of the Consortium.

If you wish to be considered for the Consortium you need to submit the following, via email, to Professor Guy Gable at g.gable@qut.edu.au, by Saturday 28 August 2010:

  1. A 3,000 word document (excluding the cover page and references) outlining the research topic, research question(s), key background literature, theoretical foundations, proposed methodology, current stage of the research, and plans for completion.
NB: The length restriction is rigid; documents exceeding 3,000 words will not be considered.
  2. A cover page showing the candidate’s full name, affiliation (university and school/department), and all contact details including name, mailing and e-mail addresses, and telephone and fax numbers. The candidate should also indicate the name(s) of his or her principal faculty supervisors.
  3. An (emailed) letter of recommendation from the student’s PhD supervisor or Head of School or equivalent, supporting the student’s nomination for the Consortium.

Nominees will be informed of the outcome by Tuesday 28 September. We look forward to receiving your nomination and to your prospective participation in
the 2010 ACIS Doctoral
Consortium.
